After falling 1-0 to the visiting Thunder Bay North Stars on Nov. 21, the Sioux Lookout Bombers came from behind to win 4-3 the following evening at the Hangar (Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena).
On Nov. 21, Cole Swanson’s first period goal held up throughout the match to be the game winner in a 1-0 North Stars victory over the Sioux Lookout Bombers. North Stars goalie Connor Dunham-Fox picked up the shutout.
The following evening, Casey Lynn and Chance Loke got the North Stars off to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
In the second period, Beau Bannerman and Sage Roberts answered back for the Bombers to tie the match 2-2, however a goal by Acoyen Fehr got the North Stars back the lead, 3-2.
A goal by Bombers forward Cooper Labelle tied the game early in the third period, setting the stage for Bombers Assistant Captain Ty Love to score the game winning goal at 12:36 to give the Bombers the win.
Matthew Ofukany picked up the win in net.
Commenting on his lighting fast, game winning goal, which came off the faceoff, Love shared, “(Owen) Cotter won it back to me, I quickly got it and shot it top corner.”
Commenting on the victory, Love said, “It’s awesome. I’m proud of all the boys. Everyone put in 100 percent.”
Bombers Head Coach Carson Johnstone shared, “Definitely tough. We were going through a bit of a stretch there where we couldn’t find the back of the net. That’s always frustrating. You go through ups and downs in the season, you go through those spells, but to finally get some traffic in front of a really good goaltender, and pot four on him felt really good for us. I think that’s good for the guys because when you’re not scoring, you squeeze your sticks a little tighter and loss confidence, but they did exactly what I asked them to do, get traffic and keep shooting the puck.”
Johnstone added, “In our last four games, aside tonight, the three games prior, we only allowed three goals against and our record was one and two. That’s pretty unheard of in the game of hockey, but they finally got rewarded with a lot of hard work tonight and I feel good for the guys.”
The First Step Women’s Shelter was also a winner at the Nov. 22 game, which saw the Bombers don special purple and white jerseys for the End Domestic Violence Game, in recognition of November being Woman Abuse Prevention Month.
During the match, representatives from the Sioux Lookout Bombers and the Rotary Club of Sioux Lookout presented representatives from First Step Women’s Shelter with a cheque for $2000 in support of the important work the shelter does. The funds were raised through the donation of 50\50 ticket proceeds and the sale of purple Bombers toques sold during the game.
