Second Degree Murder charge laid as OPP continue investigation into suspicious death in Pikangikum First Nation

A teenager has been charged with Second Degree Murder after the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) classified a suspicious death in Pikangikum First Nation on March 27, as a homicide.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to section 235 (1) of the Criminal Code.
The accused is being held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on April 10.
On March 27 members of the Pikangikum Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for service at a location near Airport Road in Pikangikum First Nation for an individual in medical distress. Police say the individual, a 50-year-old Pikangikum First Nation resident, was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.
The OPP North West Region Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit continue the investigation, under the direction of OPP CIB.
