The Sioux North High School Warriors edged the visiting Dryden High School Eagles 5-4 on Jan. 10 in a boys hockey match at the Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena.
The Warriors led the game 4-2 in the second period, however the Eagles rallied and tied the game 4-4 before the period ended.
The third period was a close contest between both teams and the game was looking like it was heading into overtime, when Sean Cole scored for the Warriors with less than 10 seconds left to give the Warriors the 5-4 win.
Cole, a grade 12 student, said after the game of his game winning goal, “We won the faceoff draw and I just poked it right by the defense, got around them, and then I skated down with about 13 seconds left and scored with 9.6 seconds left. I was pretty happy about that.”
“We’re pretty sick and tired of overtime wins, so it was good to get one in regulation,” he added.
“I think we had a decent game,” shared Warriors boys hockey team Coach John Carnochan. “We came out a little slow, like we usually do. That put us a little bit behind. One of the things we’ve been working on with the kids is adversity. When we face adversity, try to fight through it, and they did… We got up 4-2, we kind of let them back in it, we had an injury there that messed with our lines a little bit, maybe got us off our game a little bit in that late part of the second. But you know, 4-4 game, anybody’s game going into the third, and we just said, let’s get this.”
The win gives the Warriors boys hockey team a record of three wins, three loses this season.
Carnochan said the team has had a lot of tight games this season, adding two of the team’s wins this season have come in overtime.
A moment of silence was observed at the start of the game for referee Chuck Schmitt, who recently passed away, as well as a former Warriors boys hockey team member, Peyton Duncan, who passed away in late November.
“We were talking to the kids a little bit about a lot of us coached and played with Peyton… and we wanted to make sure we got a win for him,” Carnochan said.
The Warriors boys team’s next home game will be on Jan. 29 against the Beaver Brae Secondary School Broncos.
