SLAAMB welcomes public for Open House

The Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board (SLAAMB) welcomed the public to an Open House and Barbeque on Tuesday, September 28 in recognition of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (held on Sept. 30). Along with offering free burgers, hot dogs and bannock, the open house showcased the work SLAAMB has done to address the employment and training needs of area First Nations. 

SLAAMB has been offering Literacy & Essential Skills training, as well as apprenticeship programs, to area First Nations residents since 1991. 

Ziggy Beardy, SLAAMB Assistant Co-Ordinator, had this to say about the day’s event. “We had an informational booth and a barbeque at the SLAAMB office at 80 Front Street, between 10 and 2 o’clock. The event was part of the Truth and Reconciliation Week leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. We gave out informational material on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at our table, and also what SLAAMB has been doing for the last 30 years now, for 25 communities, and what we are continually doing today. It was a really good turnout, a lot of material was picked up and the free burgers and hot dogs all went just like that! It was really quite successful.” 

As for upcoming events, Beardy added, “For Christmas we usually have a Craft Fair, we’ll be having that in maybe a couple of weeks, we usually have that every year.”
