For Sioux Lookout residents looking to keep busy throughout the winter season, the Sioux Lookout Recreation Centre may have you covered.
The Rec. Centre is offering a variety of activities for residents this winter from lacing up the skates to enjoying a date night while painting.
The Sioux Lookout Memorial Arena offers weekly drop-in skating opportunities for all ages. Public skating is available throughout each week with times on Mondays (3:30-5 p.m.), Tuesdays & Thursdays (12:30-1:30 p.m.), Saturdays (11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.), and Sundays (9:30-11 a.m.). Teen Skates, which feature music and strobe lights for ages 12-19, are every Saturday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. and cost $5 per person. Stick and Puck is also available every Saturday with ages 11 and under from 9-10 a.m. and ages 12 and up from 10-11 a.m. The costs are $7 for adults and $5 for youth, students, and seniors. A stick, puck, helmet, gloves, and skates are required for Stick and Puck.
Skating times are subject to change especially during tournament season, but the outdoor rink, located on Third Avenue across from The Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. The outdoor rink features a new heated building, rubber matting, and benches to help residents enjoy the outdoor skating experience.
For those looking for a warmer and more relaxing environment, registrations are now open for two paint nights coming in February. Youth ages 6-18 will have the opportunity to be guided step-by-step by local artist Chelsey Greig in creating a painting that they’ll be able to take home. The Kids and Youth Paint a Piece Night will be on Feb. 1 at the Recreation Centre gymnasium, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Sioux Lookout residents can register for a Sip, Dip, and Paint Night on Feb. 15 at Dick’s Grillhouse. This event will also be guided by Chelsey Greig in creating a take-home painting. The event is for ages 19 and up.
More paint nights will also be offered closer to spring. There will be another Sip, Dip, and Paint Night on April 5, Kids and Youth Paint a Piece Night on April 26, and Mother’s Day Paint a Piece event on May 12.
“People can keep an eye out for registration for Minor Soccer and Baseball, Cedar Bay Summer Camp, and Slo-Pitch in the coming months as well,” added Recreation & Culture Department administrative assistant Meredith Culham.
The Rec. Centre also hosts drop-in court sports weekly. Drop-in Pickle Ball takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Tennis is scheduled on Thursdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon. Squash is every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9:50. Memberships are available for purchase at the Rec. Centre front desk. Drop in fees apply for non members.
Access to weight room, running/walking track, cardio room, courts and gym is available to the public year-round. Drop-in fees apply for those without a membership. Drop-in fees for a day, which includes full access to all the rooms and courts, are $9.04 for teens 15-17, $13.56 for ages 18 and up, and $11.30 for seniors aged 55 and older.
