My Bloody Valentine
Cupids, hearts and flowers on Valentines? For your Sioux North wrestlers there was only blood, sweat and Warrior pride. The Valentine’s tournament was held in Thunder Bay at Hammarskjold High School the day after Valentine’s, and it was definitely not a “sweet” affair. Gold medalist Omi Sakamoto showed no love, violently “crushing” her opponent 10-0 with a pin in the final moments of two of their three meetings. She also caught the eye of the head coach of Lakehead University who was scouting prospective wrestlers. Silver medalist Cashiuss Angeconeb’s technical prowess was on full display, as he went to war time and time again. It was incredibly impressive how far this first-year wrestler has come in such a short time and his ability to adapt, change and implement his game plan on the fly. He also caught the eye of the St. Ignatius OFSAA championship winning coach for his grit and potential, high praise indeed. Evan Burch expressed his technical superiority and outclassed his first adversary 12-1 on his way to the silver medal. Evan is an excellent wrestler, and with a little more experience we believe that the sky is the limit for this young man. Mihtig Donnely, a strong, stoic mountain of a man calmly picked up his sword and shield and headed to the battlefield time and time again. There was no love in Mihtig’s “embrace” as he repeatedly sent his opponents hurtling into the Earth. Mihtig secured a bronze medal. In our opinion Cassius Tallifer is the epitome of heart. This grade 9 wrestler, undersized, and competing against much older and more experienced wrestlers showed up, gave it his all and left EVERYTHING on the mat for every one of his matches. There is absolutely no quit in this young man and we are all excited to see his growth in the upcoming years. We are so proud of our Warrior Wrestlers!
