Rubber Ducky Race supports local skaters

More than 400 colourful rubber ducks gently made their way down the creek at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club on August 5 as a part of this year’s Rubber Ducky Race in support of the Sioux Lookout Skating Club.

The event, an annual fundraiser for the club, was run a bit differently this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, explained fundraising volunteer Dorothy Broderick, “In regular years, we are fortunate to have many businesses donating prizes to the race and we appreciate them very much. However, as lockdowns have taken a toll on businesses and on volunteer availability, we felt that it was time to make a change to cash prizes. This year’s first prize was $1,000 and went to Sharon Tompkins. Second was $500 and went to Laura Vesao. Third was $300 and went to Anneka Daley. To keep things fun right up until the end, we also have a last duck in and that was Jennifer McKay’s duck, winning $200.”

She added, “The event was a success and we are grateful to the staff at Drayton Cash and Carry for their work helping sell duck tickets, the parent volunteers and skaters who sold duck tickets and/or helped on race day as well as the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club for allowing us to use the creek and helping with water flow. We are also grateful to the TIC and Fresh Market Foods who let us set up outside tables for ticket sales. We were able to sell over 400 duck tickets which made for a fun race.
