Roadway flooding on Highway 664

Motorists using Highway 664 recently may have noticed some flooding near the Pelican Falls Road turn off. 
A request for information from the Ministry of Transportation on what actions MTO might take to alleviate the situation prompted the following response: “Northwestern Ontario experienced a significant weather event last Friday (April 22), lasting throughout the weekend. This resulted in flooding and road washouts throughout the region. At the Ministry of Transportation, road safety is our top priority. Water levels are receding, and the ministry continues to monitor the situation. The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is aware of the concern regarding the culvert near the turn off to Pelican Falls high school and will assess what repair work may be appropriate after water levels subside. Up to date information can be found at www.Ontario.ca/511, via the Ontario 511 app, or by dialing 5-1-1. Drivers may need to plan on delays or alternative routes due to road closures.”
Municipal Public Works and Infrastructure Manager Jeff Hawley noted the situation on Highway 664 is outside of municipal jurisdiction. He shared, “As for our municipal roads, we only have one location with water causing us to undertake pumping to mitigate water over the road, and this is on Sturgeon Road.  Crews are in attendance and the situation is under control.  The crews have been steaming culverts when needed, but currently no other roads are experiencing water issues, with culverts and ditches flowing.”
