Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora—Kiiwetinoong
Dear Constituents
I have appreciated the opportunity to attend events in many communities over the last few weeks. Thank you to everyone who has given me their input on priorities for Parliament. Now, with the House of Commons set to return next week, I’m eager to get back to work in Ottawa.
Recent comments from the American President have highlighted yet again why we must take Canadian sovereignty seriously. Canada will never be American, and we will never be the 51st state. My colleagues and I will continue to stand up to defend our independence, our borders, our national interests, and our allies in NATO. Canada must stand with our allies who have stood by us, including Denmark and Greenlanders.
Sovereignty is not something that can be negotiated or compromised, and it isn’t just about borders or diplomacy, either. Economic sovereignty here in Canada is just as critical, and right now, it’s continually being chipped away. With the recent closure of the sawmills in Ignace and Ear Falls, the Liberals under Mark Carney are allowing completely unjustified US tariffs to cripple the northwestern Ontario economy. These tariffs are still in place despite the Prime Minister promising a trade deal by July 2025. Now, good-paying jobs are disappearing, leaving families anxious and uncertain about their future. The Prime Minister has made many positive comments about the need to make Canada self-reliant. It’s now time for real action and Conservatives are ready to work together to make that happen.
Another top priority is the cost-of-living crisis. Groceries, housing, fuel, and heating are continuing to get more costly. In fact, new Statistics Canada data shows Canada has the highest food price inflation of the G7 countries. For many Canadians, the left-over money after their expenses are paid is shrinking or non-existent. Canadians deserve a government that can deliver a real plan to bring these costs down.
As we return to Ottawa, Conservatives are ready to continue pushing for common-sense solutions to these challenges. We need to defend Canadian sovereignty both on the map and in the wallet, as well as supporting our allies and our industries. I look forward to returning and standing up for northwestern Ontario and Canada.
