Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora—Kiiwetinoong
Dear Constituents
This summer, I’ve valued the opportunity to attend meetings focused on the issues that matter to people across northwestern Ontario.
I recently met with Kenora Mayor Andrew Poirier and Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Mayor Gale Black to discuss border security through Lake of the Woods. I also discussed local priorities with Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance.
Most importantly, I’ve appreciated speaking with so many people about the challenges they’re facing – including the rising cost of living, the lack of affordable housing, and the ongoing effects of inflation on northern Ontario.
These conversations are essential, and I look forward to continuing them as I prepare for Parliament’s return this fall.
Liberal Debt Expected to Reach $92 Billion This Year
Canadians have just learned that the federal deficit is expected to soar to over $92 billion this year. This is nearly double what was originally forecast.
We’ve also learned that Mark Carney plans to borrow even more than Trudeau did during the pandemic—setting a record for the highest level of borrowing in Canadian history.
Carney’s reckless spending spree of campaign promises, government bureaucracy, and consultants will be paid for by Canadian taxpayers, through rising taxes and increased inflation.
It’s no surprise that the latest inflation numbers keep getting worse. Food prices continued to rise by 2.9% year over year, while rent increased by 4.7% and passenger vehicle prices increased by 4.1% year over year.
The government should be focused on cutting spending on wasteful bureaucracy, consultants, foreign aid, and corporate welfare so that Carney’s out of control spending does not cause more inflation when Canadians can least afford it.
The Liberals presented their last federal budget over a year ago. Canadians deserve a transparent financial plan that shows how Liberals plan to pay for their mess, and that’s exactly what Conservatives will continue advocating for.
