Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
It was good to meet with Treaty Three Police Chief Cheryl Gervais and the command team to discuss the great work T3PS does to keep communities in our region safe and how the federal government needs to step up to support their work.
Unfortunately, the NDP-Liberal government has failed to provide First Nation police services with proper resources to do their job, leaving many to stretch their current resources thin. Instead of working to address this, the government has chosen to continue the status quo of dragging their feet and ignoring the problem.
The NDP-Liberal government cannot continue to ignore policing services on First Nations and must come to the table. I will continue to advocate to the government that they need to take this issue seriously and ensure there are adequate policing services in every community.
Rising Crime in Canada
After nine years, the NDP-Liberal government’s dangerous catch-and-release policies are making Canada unsafe. Recently released Statics Canada data shows that violent crime has increased 50%, homicides are up by 28%, sexual assaults are up 75%, and gang murders have nearly doubled.
The NDP-Liberal policies that have caused crime to spike across Canada include Bill C-75, which implemented catch-and-release bail policies, and Bill C-5, which removed mandatory minimum sentences for certain major crimes. This has allowed violent criminals to get out of jail and be released into Canadian communities sooner.
This issue is so bad that every single Canadian premier, across party lines, wrote a letter pleading with the government to scrap their catch-and-release bail policies before more lives are lost.
Recently, The NDP-Liberal government was even forced to admit recently that 256 people were killed in 2022 by criminals out on bail or another form of release. This must end. Canadians need to feel safe in their communities again.
That is why a Common Sense Conservative government will ensure that repeat violent offenders remain behind bars while awaiting trial and we will bring back mandatory jail time for serious violent crimes that were repealed by the NDP-Liberal government. Conservatives believe in jail, not bail, for repeat violent offenders.
We will bring home safe streets.

Each season has its own charms and we are well into the switch from summer to fall. Today we started feeding the birds again and have been thrilled to see many chickadees at the feeder...
