Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
After nine years of this NDP-Liberal government, everything has become more expensive. The cost of housing has doubled while families are paying $700 more for groceries this year than they did in 2023. Millions of Canadians are having to rely on food banks just to survive.
As Canadians are struggling just to keep their heads above water, the NDP-Liberal government is raising taxes on people at the worst possible time. According to a recent report from the Fraser Institute, Canadians are now paying more in taxes than they do on food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities combined.
Since Trudeau became Prime Minister, the average Canadian family is paying $10,000 more in taxes than they were nine years ago. While he raised everyone’s taxes, his inflationary spending made life more expensive for everyone.
The report found that “taxes have grown much more rapidly than any other single expenditure.” Under this NDP-Liberal government, the average Canadian family now spends more of their income on taxes (43.0 percent) than they do on basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing combined (35.6 percent). Nobody can afford this.
Canadians are experiencing a cost-of-living crisis. Yet the government’s only response has been to hike taxes even further. In April, the government decided to increase the carbon tax by 23 percent, as part of their plan to quadruple the carbon tax by 2030. And this spring, the NDP-Liberal government introduced another job-killing tax hike on health care, homebuilding, small businesses, and farmers, which will drive even more investment out of the country.
Only Common Sense Conservatives will end the inflationary spending and cut taxes so Canadians can bring home more of what they earn.
