Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
I hope everyone had a safe and happy Canada Day. I enjoyed spending the day at the Kenora Harbourfront. It was nice to see so many come out to celebrate our great country.
I recently met with Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance to discuss the community’s priorities and how the federal government can work with the municipality to advance those priorities. It was also great to meet with Kenora’s Indigenous Relations Advisor, Ed Mandamin, to discuss his new role and to identify more opportunities for partnership with Indigenous communities.
Inflation Rises Again
After nine years of this NDP-Liberal government, life is unaffordable for Canadians. Their inflationary spending and taxes have driven up the cost of everything, with food costing Canadians $700 more this year than it did in 2023.
This was clear again after Statistics Canada recently revealed that inflation rose to 2.9 percent in May.
This happened after the NDP-Liberal government celebrated multiple times that inflation was under control. Last year, Trudeau’s Finance Minister even declared victory, saying that their plan to tackle inflation “is working.”
But their economic plan is not working. Prices at the grocery store are on the rise, as is the cost of rent, which is up 8.9 percent. Yet they refuse to listen to Conservatives and axe the tax to provide relief for families.
This inflation spike is the direct consequence of the NDP-Liberal government’s reckless inflationary spending.
In April, Common Sense Conservatives warned that their spending was keeping interest rates higher for longer, pushing millions of mortgage holders to the edge. Despite this, they decided to add $61 billion in new inflationary spending in their most recent budget anyways.
This means the average family is now having to pay nearly $4000 in new inflationary spending. In fact, Statistics Canada also revealed that spending grew almost 3 times faster than revenue in the first quarter of 2024.
The NDP-Liberal government is not worth the cost. Only Common Sense Conservatives will axe the tax and fix the budget to bring home lower prices for Canadians.
