Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
It was an honour to speak at the First Nations Chiefs of Police Association conference with MP Jamie Schmale. We shared our Common Sense Conservative plan to stop the crime and support the work of police services to bring home safe communities.
I enjoyed connecting with residents at Family Safety Night in Ear Falls. Thank you to everyone who dropped by to chat. I ended the week speaking with students at Crolancia Public School in Pickle Lake as they learn about our democracy and the role of the federal government.
Bring home our loved ones drug free
After 9 years, the NDP-Liberal government’s dangerous hard drug legalization experiment, and their distribution of taxpayer-funded hard drugs to Canadians suffering with addiction, have failed.
Since they formed government in 2015, over 42,000 Canadians have died from drug overdoses. In British Columbia, where federal government allowed the NDP government to legalize these drugs, there has been a nearly 400 percent increase in overdose deaths.
The federal government must be honest with Canadians over the harm these drugs have created in communities across Canada. For this reason, Common Sense Conservatives have introduced a motion calling on the NDP-Liberal Government and provinces to release all contracts relating to their reckless distribution of hard drugs within three weeks of the adoption of this motion.
This is especially important as these drugs continue to be diverted to the most vulnerable Canadians. This means that they have ended up in the hands of organized crime and are then sold, leading many into the destructive cycle of addiction.
Only Common Sense Conservatives will end taxpayer dollars for hard drugs. We will support policies that get people struggling with addiction into recovery to break the cycle and bring home our loved ones drug free.
There also must be greater consequences for the drug dealers preying on the vulnerable and for repeat violent offenders by fixing the broken bail system.
If the NDP-Liberal government won’t get it done, Canada’s Conservatives will.
