Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
I want to wish everyone a happy Easter and hope that you were be able to spend it with family and loved ones.
It was great to be in Dryden and Kenora with the Forestry Products Association of Canada CEO, Derek Nighbor. The forestry industry provides powerful paycheques to thousands of residents in northwestern Ontario and across the country and is vital to our economy. Thank you to the teams at each mill for showing us their operations.
Tax Increases
On April 1st, the NDP-Liberal government imposed a 23% increase to the carbon tax and a 2% increase to the tax on beer, wine, and spirits despite 70% of Canadians and 70% of Premiers were opposed to April Fools Day tax hike. While Common Sense Conservatives gave the NDP-Liberal government many opportunities to spike the hike, they voted to raise taxes every time.
I was in Thunder Bay to continue to call on the local Liberal MPs to speak up and tell the Prime Minister to spike the hike.
These tax increases mean a family of four will have to pay $700 more in groceries in 2024. After record-breaking food bank usage last year, Canadians cannot afford this tax increase.
People are already being forced to choose between filling up their car, heating their home, and feeding their family.
To make matters worse, the NDP-Liberal Minister of Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven Guilbeault said he will continue to increase the carbon tax. His comments promising further tax increases are extremely frightening to Canadians already struggling to make ends meet under the NDP-Liberal inflationary carbon tax.
The only way to spike the hike is to elect a Common Sense Conservative government that will axe the tax.
