Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
This week, Common Sense Conservatives gave the NDP-Liberal government a chance to cancel their April 1st carbon tax hike. But the government doubled down on their upcoming tax increase.
As a result, Conservatives brought forward a motion of non-confidence in this government so we can have a carbon tax election and Canadians can decide between the NDP-Liberal plan to quadruple the tax or our plan to axe the tax. As usual, the NDP voted to support the Trudeau Liberals and deny Canadians an opportunity to go to the polls.
After eight years of this government, life has never been more expensive. To make matters worse, their April 1st tax hike—this time by 23%—will make everything more expensive including gas, heat, and groceries. This tax increase means a family of four will have to pay $700 more in groceries in 2024. After record-breaking food bank usage last year, Canadians cannot afford this tax increase.
People are already being forced to choose between filling up their car, heating their home, and feeding their family.
On top of this, the government will be imposing another tax hike on April 1st—a 2% increase on beer, wine, and spirits. These tax hikes may be coming on April 1st, but Canadians know this pain they are feeling thanks to the government’s inflationary taxes is no joke.
Only Conservatives will axe the carbon tax, for everyone, everywhere, for good.
