Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
After 8 years of Justin Trudeau, Canadians don’t feel safe walking down the street. And the NDP-Liberal government is doing nothing to stop it. In fact, they are making it worse.
Violent crime is up 39%, homicides are up 43%, and violent gun crime has increased for the eighth consecutive year.
That is why I am proud to have tabled Bill C-376 to address the rise in violent crime by preventing violent criminals from owning firearms.
Currently, for certain violent offences, a prohibition on firearms or devices is part of a judge’s sentence on an offender. My bill makes it so that all violent criminals will be prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Rather than the NDP-Liberal approach of taking hunting rifles away from firearms owners who have not broken any laws, my common sense bill punishes violent criminals by requiring a court order be placed to ban them from owning firearms. Criminals found in violation of the order can be charged with a criminal offence.
Only Conservatives are serious about addressing the rise in violent crime and we will bring home safe streets.
