Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
It was an honour to lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day ceremony in Kenora to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Our veterans and those serving today represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian. Their selflessness and courage serve as an inspiration to all of us. Lest we forget.
Carbon Tax on Home Heating
Recently, our Conservative team tabled a motion to pause the carbon tax on all forms of home heating. This comes after the Liberal government announced a pause on home heating oil. This temporary pause will not help 97% of Canadians.
Despite this announcement, Canadians will still pay Trudeau’s carbon tax on gas, heat and groceries. The Prime Minister even admitted that he is “doubling down” on his plan to quadruple the carbon tax on Canadians. This tax will continue to go up every year, increasing the pain felt by families in northwestern Ontario and across Canada.
Liberals have said the pause was granted because Atlantic Liberal MPs were vocal and Canadians west of Ottawa should have voted for them if they wanted a pause for their region. The majority of MPs in northern Ontario are Liberals, including a Liberal Minister, but they are missing in action on this. The Minister from Thunder Bay even tried to justify this by saying we do not have the same affordability challenges in northern Ontario that are seen in Atlantic Canada. I completely disagree—we have an affordability crisis in northern Ontario and the government must take it seriously.
Unfortunately, the Liberals with the help of the separatist Bloc Québécois voted our motion down. Only Conservatives will axe the tax for good and bring home lower prices for all Canadians.
