Report From Parliament Hill
Eric Melillo, MP, Kenora Riding
Dear Constituents
It has been a busy week in Ottawa. I had an opportunity to share the importance of northern Ontario forestry to our environment and economy. Conservatives will support the workers in this sector by cutting red tape and solving the softwood lumber dispute. I also met with Sioux Lookout Mayor Doug Lawrance to discuss local priorities and how the federal government can assist municipalities.
Affordable Housing
This week, the House of Commons was focused on the housing crisis. After 8 years of this Liberal government, the cost of a mortgage, rent, and a down payment have doubled. 9 in 10 young people say they’ll never be able to afford a home.
Before the Liberals formed government in 2015, it took 25 years to pay off a mortgage – now, it takes 25 years just to save up for a downpayment. The International Monetary Fund warns Canada is the most at risk for a mortgage default crisis in the G7.
Thanks to the Prime Minister’s inaction, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation projects homebuilding is down year-over-year. Canada has a housing shortage crisis. Justin Trudeau’s solution for this historic housing crisis is more photo ops and plagiarizing Conservative messaging.
Eight years ago, the Liberals promised that they would remove the GST from new rental housing. Six years ago, they broke that promise.
Now, after catching wind of legislation Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre introduced that axes the housing tax, Liberals have flip flopped yet again to try and take credit.
There used to be a deal in Canada. You work hard, you get a home. The Liberals broke that deal, but Conservatives are going to fix it. That’s why only Conservatives have a plan to bring homes families can afford.
