Municipality seeking volunteer firefighters
Tim Brody - Editor
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout Fire and Emergency Service is looking for two individuals interested in becoming volunteer firefighters for Sioux Lookout Hall 1 and Hudson Hall 2.
According to Manager of Emergency Services / Fire Chief Robert Popovic, the Municipality currently has 32 firefighters which include captains, a deputy chief and district chief.
Popovic stressed that this current compliment of firefighters are able to meet any and all emergencies.
The Municipality shared that volunteer firefighters attend to many different types of emergencies including; structure fires, water & ice rescue, motor vehicle accident, and brush & grass fire.
Popovic explained that all new firefighters will be required to take extensive training so that they can be part of the emergency services, a process that can take several months.
For this reason, the Municipality is looking to bolster their ranks as soon as possible.
“As per our by-law, the minimum age is 18. However, it would be beneficial that the applicant have experience and knowledge in nursing, carpentry, electrical, and mechanics. In the fire service, we are required to be knowledgeable in all aspects of construction to assist with the three lines of defence; public education, fire inspections and fire suppression. The applicant must also have a valid driver’s license, and we are expecting that the firefighter will acquire a DZ license within 1 year,” Popovic explained.
The Municipality is hoping to hear from interested applicants no later than noon on March 19.
