An MRI unit is a step closer to becoming a reality in Sioux Lookout thanks to the support of a long-time local family.
On Dec. 15, members of the Morgan family, joined by their staff at Morgan Fuels, presented representatives from the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre Foundation with a cheque for $150,000 to be put towards an MRI unit for the Meno Ya Win Health Centre.
Darrell Morgan, who is also president of Morgan Fuels, shared, ““The Morgan family, being part of Sioux Lookout and wanting to give back to the community… We see that that as a regional thing that will serve not only the surrounding communities close by, but all the northern First Nations as well and we feel the importance of that. To help with healthcare in the region is vital and very much needed in our area and we wanted to be involved and help get it started.”
“Morgan Fuels began servicing customers when it was founded by Ebenezer Morgan in 1935 in Sioux Lookout, ON. Ebenezer sold only land fuels in the early days: automotive gas, kerosene fuel and home heating oil. In 1969, his son Lew Morgan purchased the company and he then sold the family business to his son Darrell in 1996. Today Darrell is the company president and in 2014 Max Morgan became the fourth generation member to join the Morgan family enterprise,” Morgan Fuels website states.
Melissa Slade, Donor Relations/Operations Coordinator, Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre Foundation, commented of the donation from the Morgan family, “It just screams community involvement. Community commitment, especially from a long-time Sioux Lookout family like the Morgans. Their commitment to healthcare and to keeping it here and just to the town itself and wellbeing for everyone here. It is just incredible.”
The campaign to bring an MRI unit to Sioux Lookout got under way on Dec. 1.
Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre Foundation President Christine Hoey had shared at the MRI campaign’s official kick off earlier this month, the Foundation has $1.5 million in the bank they are putting towards the start of the MRI campaign, leaving an estimated amount of $5.5 million to be raised.
Money raised through the Sioux Lookout Home Hardware Skip to Equip Classic, $130,000, has also been received, further bringing down the amount needed to make the MRI unit a reality.
