Letter to the editor

Dear editor, Thank you for publishing the article about my journey to reclaim what is, in my opinion, crucial, not just ancestral, Anishinaabe knowledge and skills.  I had an enjoyable conversation with Mike for the article.

I do feel disappointed that some important information that I shared with Mike did not make it to print.  The first line of the article quotes me saying that this knowledge wasn’t intentionally lost on my family’s part.  What wasn’t printed, was that this crucial knowledge was taken from me and my family by the Indian Residential School system and by Canada’s historical and ongoing colonization and assimilation of Indigenous Peoples, and that I am from Lac Seul First Nation.  The land that Sioux Lookout is situated on is the land that the people from Lac Seul have used and lived on for long before it became a town and municipality.   In this “era of truth and reconciliation” I encourage the Sioux Bulletin to publish these truths.  By not doing so, I feel this publication continues the erasure of the Anishinaabe people who live here and the ugly history of the Crown and governments.
