The Royal Canadian Legion, Edwin Switzer Memorial, Branch 78 in Sioux Lookout was packed during two steak dinners held during the Blueberry Festival.
“Both of the Steak Fry's went over well. Thanks to our volunteers who came in and helped make them a success,” commented Legion general manager/ bar manager/secretary Polly McCarty. “The first steak fry (on August 2) we had 145 people and the second steak fry (on August 9) we had 100 people.”
She shared, “The steak dinner is not really a fundraiser for the Legion. If we make money we are happy, but it is more of a community event. We enjoy hosting a dinner for people to gather with their family and friends have a drink and relax while their steak is on the grill.
“I think it's become somewhat of a tradition for people to come down, enjoy a dinner out while reconnecting with past residents and visitors coming in over the summer and for the Blueberry Festival. We actually started a guestbook this year for people to sign with their contact information so past friends and acquaintances can try to connect with one another and visit while they are in town. We love that our Steak Frys are a part of the Blueberry Festival events and truly appreciate all who come out and support the Legion. It's great to see so many faces!”
McCarty thanked Legion President Kirk Drew, Executive Recreation Sports Chairwoman Cynthia Suprovich, House Chairman, Bar Chairman and Poppy Chairman John Cole, bar staff Meg Brohm-Boles and Alexa Seamark, as well as volunteers Leslie West, Tony Anderson, BJ Egerter and Spencer Bak for helping out at the steak BBQs.
A special thank you to Todd and Tracey and their great staff at Fresh Market Foods for putting together our Steak Fry orders and providing us with the juiciest cuts of meat and the best fresh produce that goes into our dinners. It would be significantly more challenging to make these nights work without them, they provide us with such fantastic service,” she concluded.
