Eight teams participated in the Edwin Switzer Memorial Legion Branch 78’s 2024 Golf Tournament last Saturday at the Sioux Lookout Golf and Curling Club.
Legion Sports Chair Derrick Greene said he was asked to try to revive the tournament, which had not run for several years.
“We decided to try and get it going again and managed to get eight teams,” he said.
“It was good. Everybody had a lot of fun. It was nice weather,” Greene commented, adding, “We’re hoping to build on it next year and get up to 18 teams.”
Greene said the Legion received a lot of support from the community for the four-ball best -ball, 18 hole tournament, with all of the prizes donated from local businesses or purchased from local businesses.
Finishing in first place was the team of Gene Duncan, Titus Morris, Joven Briones, and Linda Magotte.
Coming in second was the team of Cody Salima, Will Grubic, Thomas Sant, and Blythe Bailey.
Finishing in third place was the team of Derrick Greene, Luc Beaulne, Dave Hildebrand and Rhonda Bertrand.
Gene Duncan shared, “Any day that you golf is a good day.”
He said he and his teammates had a good time playing in the event.
“We were consistent. A little bit of scrambling here and there, but all in all we did what he had to do.”
Cody Salima shared, “It was very fun. I had a good time with my friends.”
Awards were presented at the Legion following the tournament during a steak fry, which was open to the community.
Legion President Kirk Drew told those gathered, “We’re trying to make the Legion a cornerstone of the community. In some places in the country, Legions are falling away faster than you know what’s happening to them. To keep this one running, we need support and this is great to see the people who have shown up tonight who have supported us.”
The Legion thanked everyone who participated in and supported the event.
