From the Mayor's Desk:
Unique Graduates
Doug Lawrance - Sioux Lookout Mayor
Perhaps what I remember most about my graduation from high school is spilling tomato juice on my tie during the formal graduation class dinner. Certainly what I remember most about graduating from university is relief. And for sure, I remember sharing my experience with friends, classmates, and family.
Those graduating this year from kindergarten, grade eight, high school, college, trade school, university, or other such milestones, will all share a unique and common memory. Graduation during the time of COVID-19. Different from any graduating class for generations past and perhaps for generations to come.
Many of you will be participating in some form of virtual graduation experience. Mainstream and social media has been filled with reports of wonderfully creative events that people have put together to enjoy shared experiences during a time when large celebrations and gatherings have been put on hold. Many of your organizing committees and schools will be endeavoring to do something to ensure your graduation is memorable.
Embrace the uniqueness. Enjoy the experience. You will remember it always.
On behalf of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout, congratulations to all of you who are graduating in this unique time. You are and always will be unique and special graduates. Stay safe and don’t spill the juice.
