Canadian in Sioux Lookout

In Sioux Lookout and across Canada July 1st will be different this year. The restrictions we are using to protect ourselves from COVID-19 put Canada Day celebratory gatherings on hold. For many years volunteer groups and clubs have faithfully helped us celebrate Canada Day in Sioux Lookout. The Lions Club daytime activities and the Volunteer Fire Department evening fireworks come to mind. On behalf of the community, thank you to all who have been involved over the years.  We look forward to getting back together next year.
Public celebrations and events such as Walleye Weekend, Indigenous Peoples Day, Canada Day, and   Blueberry Festival, will either be missed or very different this year. While we can certainly lament not having those gatherings, we still have much that we can celebrate living in Sioux Lookout, in Canada.
Perhaps something we can celebrate this year is that we decided to make and collectively accept certain personal sacrifices for the benefit of all of us.  In Sioux Lookout we continue to play our part in the coronavirus battle. Some might argue that we in Sioux Lookout have an advantage over many Canadians – we are used to being isolated, living remotely. Even if we all got together it wouldn’t be a large group by city standards. We would take up only one quarter of the seats in the arena where the Raptors and Maple Leafs play. For us  these are things we can celebrate and be grateful for as Canadians living in Sioux Lookout – we are close to wilderness activities, our air is clear, our lakes are beautiful, plentiful and accessible, and we are – ‘far from the madding crowd’.
Please enjoy Canada Day in Sioux Lookout. Take time to wave to your neighbours and fellow citizens and wish them well on Canada Day. On behalf of the Municipality of Sioux Lookout it is my pleasure to wish each and every one of you a Happy Canada Day.
