Young NAN leaders present to UN special rapporteur

Young Nishnawbe Aski Nation members presented to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples James Anaya October 14, outlining issues facing young Aboriginal people. Julaine Trudeau of Muskrat Dam and Kathryn Morris of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug joined the delegation, along with Samantha Crowe and Uko Abara of Thunder Bay. The group shared issues and solutions developed at the Feathers of Hope Forum held earlier this year in Thunder Bay.

Inspirational documentary comes to SLMHC

An inspiring guest visited the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre October 17, bringing with her a film showcasing determination and spirit in the face of adversity. Ordinary Woman, Extraordinary Dreams tells the story of Maggie Sofea, who grew up in Nibinamik (Summer Beaver). When she was 11 years old, Sofea was paralyzed in a diving accident at a fishing camp, and has been in a wheelchair ever since, forced to move to Thunder Bay with her family to access medical care. The documentary follows her as she prepares to return to Summer Beaver, 12 years later.

Halloween treat

Halloween is fast approaching and as the evening of spooky fun draws closer, Fred Vanderploeg’s annual Halloween display grows. Vanderploeg has been setting up elaborate displays for several years with the help of his wife Tracy Rowsell at their 55 Second Avenue North home. Vanderploeg said he enjoys working on the display each year and seeing the enjoyment it brings to viewers.
