Wonderland by night
Yankee Candle on the deck railing. It was a mellow evening at camp, watching sunset waltz gently into the night.
From nowhere came the most beautiful music in the world - Wonderland by Night, by Bert Kaempfert.
In high school, about 1961, I wrote that song in the margin of one of my textbooks, knowing that in the decades to come, students following after would be roused with wonderful emotions.
“Then came the sunrise,
Fading the moon and stars from sight
Recalling always
Our wonderland by Night.”
It was the song I looked forward to at the Saturday night dances, slowly and sensuously holding close and hugging dearly the nicest girl in the world as the two of us slipped silently around the floor, hoping the music would never end.
The birds at the feeder are gone for the day.
A west bound train lugs its way across the bay heading for the coast.
The cloud obscured moon lightly illuminates snow on ice as silhouettes of hills appear to the south.
Evening works its magic.
“Stars hang suspended
Above a floating suspended moon
Two hearts were blended
While angels sang a lover’s tune”
The black of night on the other side of a window pane is sometimes the merry glimpse of happy fantasies.
