Dick's Hideaway:
A leaning tree
Dick MacKenzie - www.dickshideaway.com
There's something nice about discovering in the late afternoon that you slipped a wrong button in the top hole and have been wearing your shirt cockeyed all day and nobody has noticed.
Lots of trees are good to lean on. Sometimes I lean against a nice pine just to rest, but most of the time I do it because it's a pleasant way to stop and look around.
Today I found a good looking jackpine on the ground. Looks like a strong wind met the old tree last summer and put it to bed. The tree still shows the charred trunk of one that survived the great forest fire of 1967 that devastated the forest around Sioux Lookout and caused evacuation of all the town residents. I will go back, cut and split the tree, and haul it all back to the cabin. It will make the finest burning flame in the firepit and we will hoard the treasured blocks to share during summer evenings with special friends.
As usual, the morning walk to the river was a beautiful exercise. Grace and I watched, again, dozens of waterfowl. Among the prettiest, I think, are the male Hooded Mergansers.
