Work is underway on the installation of a crosswalk at the intersection of Sturgeon River Road and Highway 72.
The Ministry of Transportation, who are conducting the project, are also covering the project’s cost.
Brian P. MacKinnon, Manager of Corporate Services/ Municipal Clerk for the Municipality of Sioux Lookout informed, “The Municipality was approached by a number of individuals and agencies, with concerns that people walking along Sturgeon River Road have no safe way to cross the highway to meet the Umfreville Trail to continue their walking journey into town. Council agreed that this was a concern and directed staff to work with MTO to find a safe solution.”
MacKinnon added, “The majority of the work will be completed in December, however the crosswalk will not be “opened” until the spring, as there are electrical components of the project that cannot be completed this fall.”
