Cozy Cabin Saturdays start up on January 4
About thirty-five people braved the sub-zero temperatures on Saturday, January 4, to walk, ski or bike to Cozy Cabin to warm up. The weather may have been frosty but the atmosphere inside the cabin at the Cedar Bay Complex was warm and friendly.
Since 2001 for almost 25 years, volunteers with the Lakeshore Committee of the Friends of Cedar Bay have walked out to Cedar Bay quite early on a Saturday morning to start the fire and get the cabin warmed up to welcome visitors, young and old. This takes place from January till the end of March every winter Saturday. The cabin is open to the public from noon to 4 pm for tea, hot chocolate, treats, drying mitts and playing board games. On many of these Saturdays there is an outside bonfire as well where marshmallows and hot dogs get roasted. Some Saturdays host special events. Between 200 and 300 people get to the cabin every winter and most agree it is the right place to be on a winter Saturday in Sioux Lookout.
You get to Cozy Cabin from the Cedar Bay Stables Parking Lot off West Point Cove Road, just past Sacred Heart School. Take the ski or bike trails which are close by or walk the Howard Lockhart Multi-Purpose trail to the lake (1 kilometre) and then walk around or across the lake to where you see the smoke rising from the most visible cabin. There are sandwich boards at the Stables and the Cabin to help you know you’re in the right place.
Cozy Cabin Saturdays are a partnership with: the Municipality (who own and operate the Cedar Bay Recreational Complex which includes Cozy Cabin); about 50 Friends of Cedar Bay volunteers who open the Cabin 10-12 Saturdays each winter and the Salvation Army Thrift Store who provide funding each winter for supplies, equipment and special events like the Winter Adventure Course, Family Day activities, dog sled rides around the bay, moonlight ski, etc.
For those interested in being a Cozy Cabin volunteer or if you have questions, please contact Florence Woolner (807 737 6046) or Suzie Hughdie (807 738 1015).
Come on out. You’ll be glad you do!

Shortly after my arrival at camp Friday afternoon one of my chickadees flew right into a window. I rushed outside to have a look and, sure enough, there was the little creature thrashing in the snow...
