2024 – What a year it was!
The Sioux Lookout Public Library was definitely the place to be in 2024!
We had the opportunity to host many events with great success thanks to you!
Over 50 visits from local schools including classes from Sioux North High School, Pelican Falls High School, Obishikookang, Sacred Heart, Sioux Mountain Public School and our Municipal daycares.
Twice a week during the summer months, we welcomed the Municipal Day Camp. We offered story time, crafts and free time while they were visiting.
Some highlights of events this past year include Henna and Garba Dancing, Poetry Classes, Family Time, Drop-in Lego, Video Game Club, 3D Printing Workshops, Painting events, Puzzle Wars, Tea & Scandal, Author Readings, Virtual Reality workshop, Nerf Wars, StoryWalk®, National Film Board Screenings and everything in between!
We had the opportunity to partner with many local organizations which allowed us to host some very successful events such as the Superhero Party, MMIWG Display, Kids and Student Finance as well as Fraud Prevention workshops, Teddy Bear Picnic, Community Baby Shower, Sticky Science, Plant Sale and Propagation workshop, Community Easter Egg Hunt, National Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations and more!
Thanks to many local volunteers, we also offered specialized programming including, Meet a Trapper, Meet a Graphic Designer, Broken Glass Art, Knitting SOS, Local Artist Showcases, Show & Tell, and Meet a Veteran!
TD Summer Reading Club had over 400 registrants. This program ran from June to August and gave children and youth the opportunity to track their reading, play games, share insights with peers and earn small sticker rewards for doing so! We are looking forward to offering this free program again over the summer months.
We celebrated 35 years in our current location in October! This day was celebrated with speeches from dignitaries, a photo booth, games, prizes and a display of some of the Library’s historical items!
Our events and programming alone brought in almost 8,500 visitors to the Library!
Our public computers and wifi saw a lot of use. Many new books, DVD’s, 3D printer and online resources were made available at no cost to local tax payers! Not including our off-site events, we saw 27,000 people come through our doors throughout the year!
We have many programs and events lined up for 2025 including a Poetry Gathering, Puzzle Wars, Painting events, Cultural Events, as well as our regular Family Times, Drop-in Lego, Tween Hang Out and Tea & Scandal. InterLibrary Loans have also resumed after a long break.
We have many new online resources that have been made available for free with your active Library Card including Gale Health & Wellness, Gale OneFile Periodical Collections, Heritage Quest Online, World Book Activity Corner, World Book Kids, as well as Transparent Language. Transparent Language has 120+ Languages available including American Sign Language, Ojibway, Cree, OjiCree and English as a Second Language. These are a wealth of online resources and can been located at www.slpl.on.ca.
We are looking forward to a great year ahead and would like to take the time to invite you in to check out our newly designed Children’s area, weekly programming events, and our continuous flow of new books for you to enjoy!
