Attempted murder charge laid in Webequie First Nation

A Webequie First Nation resident has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following what Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) are calling an alleged stabbing incident in that community on Oct. 19.
NAPS shared in an Oct. 20 media release, “Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service working from the Webequie First Nation detachment received a call for service in the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 19 about a serious assault that had just occurred in the community.
“An investigation revealed a male and female who were known to each other were on School Road when they became involved in an altercation. The altercation became physical and the female was allegedly assaulted by the male accused.
“The victim sustained serious injuries consistent with a stabbing, and was initially treated for those injuries at the community nursing station. Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim was transported to Thunder Bay for further evaluation and treatment of those injuries.”
Police say the victim remains in the hospital and that the exact extent of her injuries was unknown as of the time the media release was issued.
The accused was located and taken into custody in the evening hours of Saturday, Oct.19.
Members of the NAPS Crime Unit are now involved in the ongoing investigation.
A 26-year-old Webequie First Nation resident has been charged with:
• Attempt to Commit Murder
• Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Failure to Comply with Release Order x 4
The accused appeared in bail court on Sunday, Oct. 20 and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
