Arson forces closure of bathroom facilities at Town Beach

Bathroom facilities at the Town Beach have been closed until further notice due to an act of arson on the evening of May 14, which the Municipality of Sioux Lookout says caused “significant damage”.
“We need time to examine the extent of the damage, assess what is required to remediate the damage, and determine what, if any, steps can be taken to minimize the risk of this type of event in the future,” explained CAO/Clerk, Brian MacKinnon. “Thanks to exceptional response times from Sioux Lookout Fire Services, damages were minimized, but this will still be costly and time-consuming to repair.”
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout informed, “Staff are currently taking steps to assess the full extent of the damage to the building, determine repair costs, and deal with our insurance company as a result of the incident.”
The Municipality shared that Ontario Provincial Police responded quickly to the 9-1-1 call reporting the fire and are currently investigating. Police informed the Municipality as of May 15, “There is no information about possible suspects or if charges will be laid at this time.”
