Sioux Lookout’s Allan McInnes has been honoured posthumously by the Ontario Provincial Police with the Commissioner’s Citation for Bravery.
Police shared that, “On February 4th, 2023 at approximately 5:00 am, a fire was reported at a local senior’s home (Patricia Plaza) in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout. Alan McInnes (who had been an employee of the Kenora District Services Board, which operates the senior’s home) unhesitatingly assisted police and emergency service personnel to clear the building, removing several residents from the burning complex. Thanks to his brave actions, all of the tenants of the building exited safely.”
“The OPP are proud to be able to honour brave actions of our community members, assisting our officers to ensure Safe Communities - A Secure Ontario,” OPP shared.
Caitlain McInnes accepted the award on behalf of her father, who passed away earlier this year on March 4.
“It really means a lot to me and my family,” McInnes said of the recognition bestowed upon her dad for his actions. “We all know how selfless he was in everyday life,” she said. “To see him honoured and recognized in such a big way, it’s really nice to see. Bittersweet that he’s not here to celebrate with us.”
McInnes said she was, “super happy” and “super proud” to accept the award on her father’s behalf. “Super, super proud of him,” she said.
McInnes said the citation will find a special place in the entrance of the family home, “So everyone can see it when they walk in.”
